What is Reiki?

Reiki (pronounced ray-key) is a Japanese healing technique developed in the early 20th century. The word combines rei (universal) and ki (life energy) — the same concept as qi in Chinese medicine or prana in Ayurveda.

Reiki works with energy, and energy is not limited by physical distance. During a virtual session, the practitioner holds intentional focus and channels healing energy to you wherever you are. You simply find a comfortable, quiet place to lie down or recline, open the video call, and receive.

Sessions are deeply relaxing. Many clients report feelings of warmth, tingling, peaceful calm, emotional release, and a renewed sense of clarity — the same experiences reported in in-person sessions.

💻 All sessions are virtualSessions are offered via Zoom or FaceTime, your choice. You'll receive the meeting link in your confirmation email. No travel, no commute, no need to leave the comfort of your own home.

What Reiki May Support

Reiki is a complement to, not a replacement for, medical care. Many people use it alongside other wellness practices for a whole-person approach to health.

🧠

Stress Reduction

Activates the parasympathetic nervous system, your “rest and digest” mode, helping quiet the mental chatter and physical tension that stress creates.

💤

Better Sleep

Many clients report deeper, more restful sleep following sessions. Releasing held tension makes it easier for the body to fully relax at night.

💛

Emotional Balance

Reiki can gently surface and help release emotions that feel stuck. Clients often experience a sense of lightness, acceptance, or quiet joy afterward.

🌀

Pain Relief Support

Research suggests Reiki may reduce perceptions of pain and discomfort, making it a helpful complement for chronic pain management.

🌿

Immune Resilience

When the body spends less energy in a stress response, it has more capacity to support natural healing and immune function.

🤝

Burnout Recovery

Especially meaningful for educators, caregivers, and helping professionals. Reiki offers a space to simply receive care without needing to give anything in return.

Common Questions About Reiki

Don't see your question here? Reach out — we're always happy to talk.

No. You don't need any particular belief system or spiritual framework for Reiki to be relaxing and beneficial. Many people who identify as skeptics still report feeling deeply calm and restored after sessions. An open mind and a willingness to simply rest are all that's needed.
Experiences vary from person to person and session to session. Common sensations include warmth or tingling in areas where hands are placed, a deep sense of relaxation (some people drift to sleep), mild emotional release, and a feeling of lightness or clarity afterward. Some people feel very little during the session but notice a shift in mood or energy in the hours that follow.
No. Because sessions are virtual, you're in your own home and can wear whatever is most comfortable for you. Loose, relaxed clothing works well — whatever you'd wear to rest in. You'll want to find a comfortable place to lie down or recline for the duration of the session, so dress for that kind of ease.
No, and that's one of the beautiful things about virtual Reiki. Because sessions are conducted over Zoom or FaceTime, there is no physical touch involved at all. The practitioner works with energy and intention at a distance. This makes virtual Reiki a wonderful option for those who are touch-sensitive, have physical limitations, or simply feel more at ease in their own space. Distance Reiki has been practiced for decades and clients consistently report sensations and results comparable to in-person sessions.
Reiki is a spiritual practice in the sense that it works with life energy and intention, but it is not affiliated with any religion and does not require you to hold any particular religious or spiritual beliefs. Reiki is practiced by people across a wide spectrum of faith traditions and by people with no religious affiliation at all.
A single session can be a meaningful, complete experience. For those dealing with chronic stress, anxiety, pain, or a longer-term pattern they want to shift, a series of sessions (often 3–6 to start) tends to build on itself in a meaningful way.
Reiki is considered very safe. It is non-invasive, gentle, and has no known harmful side effects. After a session, some people experience mild tiredness, emotional release, or an increase in the need to drink water — all of which are normal and typically resolve within a few hours. Staying hydrated and giving yourself quiet time after a session can help integrate the experience.
No. Reiki is a complementary practice meant to support well-being alongside conventional care, not replace it. Please continue working with your healthcare providers. Many hospitals, cancer centers, and hospice programs now offer Reiki as a complementary service for exactly this reason.
Find a quiet, comfortable place where you can lie down or fully recline for the duration of the session without being interrupted — your bed, couch, recliner, or a yoga mat all work well. Dim the lights if you'd like, and have a blanket nearby as some people feel cooler during deep relaxation. Eat a light meal beforehand and drink a full glass of water before the session. Have your device propped or positioned so the camera can see you without you having to hold it. You can close your eyes once the session begins — you don't need to watch the screen. If there's an intention you'd like to hold — something you're working through, releasing, or opening to — you're welcome to bring it. Simply resting is also enough.
The sliding scale exists because wellness care should not only be available to those who can afford full price. You self-select your rate based on your honest financial situation — no verification, no questions asked. The Community Rate is for those experiencing financial hardship or working in professions with lower pay rates. In particular, we tend to think of our friends in education and social justice here. The Standard Rate is what sustains the practice. The Sustainer Rate allows those with more financial flexibility to help cover the cost of sessions for those who need reduced rates. All rates receive exactly the same quality of care.
Distance Reiki, including sessions over video, is a well-established practice, not a compromise. Reiki works with energy, which is not bound by physical proximity. Practitioners have offered distance sessions for decades, long before video calling existed, often conducting them with nothing more than a photo and a name. Many clients actually find virtual sessions more effective because they're already in their own comfortable space, lying in their own bed, without the vulnerability of being in an unfamiliar room. The absence of travel stress also means clients often arrive more relaxed.
Reiki sessions are available Tuesday through Thursday, 7:30 AM – 3:45 PM and Sunday, 7:30 AM – 10:30 AM and 6:15 PM – 7:45 PM, all times Central, and are conducted virtually via Zoom or FaceTime — you'll choose your preferred platform when booking. You can book directly using the calendar below. Appointments must be booked at least 6 hours in advance. After booking, you'll receive a confirmation email with information about providing payment, your meeting link (if choosing Zoom), and all the details you need. A reminder will also be sent 48 hours before your session.
